Meeting was convened at 4:15 p.m. by Chairman Majikes

ITEM 1           Chairman Majikes called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m.  

                        Absent but accounted for: Frank Victor, Danielle Adams, Jim Higgins, Mike Costanza

                        Also Present:  Don Rogers (District Solicitor), Phil Latinski (Advisor)

ITEM 2           A motion was made by Tom Jenkins, seconded by Bill Schoen, to approve the minutes of the February 17, 2010 meeting. All Ayes

ITEM 3           In Frank Victor’s absence, Chairman Majikes reported that all of the accounts for the recently completed Winter Championships’ season have been reconciled and all of the checks to officials and game managers have been processed and mailed.  Frank Victor will present a complete report at the April meeting.

ITEM 4           Chairman Majikes announced the schedule for the PIAA Winter Sports’                             Steering Committee meetings scheduled at the State Office on Thursday,                             April 8th:

                                                Basketball                               10 A.M.

                                                Swimming & Diving               Noon

                                                Wrestling                                 2 P.M.

ITEM 5           Chairman Majikes announced that due to the resignation of Dino Galella, Wilkes-Barre GAR principal, there is now an opening on the District     

II Committee. All applicants must be an administrator from one of the high schools in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District.  That position will be posted on the website and all applications are to be sent to Mr. Majikes prior to April 12, 2010.

ITEM 6           SPORTS REPORTS:

§         Boys’ Tennis (Mike Ognosky):  Mike Ognosky presented the proposed format for the upcoming 2010 District II Boys’ Tennis Championships.   The Team Championships will be held on Tuesday, May 4th; the Singles Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 6th and 7th; and the Doubles Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 11th and 12th.  A motion was made by Bill King, seconded by Jeff Gregory, to approve the format as submitted.  All Ayes

§         Wrestling (Jay Starnes):  Jay thanked those that were involved in the recently concluded District Championships and announced that two District II Wrestlers had won state championships at the recently concluded Individual Championships.  Eric Laytos (Lackawanna Trail) was the 215 pound AA Champion and Evan Craig (AbingtonHeights) repeated as the 285 pound AAA Champion.  Congratulations to both.

§         Track (Danielle Adams):  Bill King, Superintendent of the Scranton School District and District II Committee member, requested that the Track and Field Committee meet with representatives of the Scranton School District in order to discuss the logistics of the three Track and Field Championships to be held at Scranton Memorial Stadium in May.  The AA and AAA Varsity meets as well as the Junior High Championships are scheduled for Scranton.

ITEM 7A motion was made by Bill King, seconded by Jim Marcks, to approve the

immediate eligibility of Emily Leighow, Lewisburg to Berwick, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Residence, and Recruiting, Section IV, of the PIAA By-Laws, Principal to Principal sign off.  All Ayes

ITEM 8           Chairman Majikes presented a request by Dallas Area High School that the District II Committee reconsider its December 23, 2009 written decision to the extent that Dallas be allowed to present additional witnesses consistent with the PIAA State Committee’s February 5, 2010 written decision.  Following a discussion of the request, a motion was made by Mike Ognosky, seconded by Tom Jenkins, that the request be denied and that the Chairman inform the PIAA State Office of that decision so that the scheduled March 27, 2010 hearing in State College before the PIAA State wide committee be maintained.  11 Ayes, 3 Abstentions (Gerald Grimaud, Maureen Williams, Frank Galicki)

ITEM 9           Chairman Majikes led a discussion regarding the upcoming April Business Meeting and Awards Banquet.  Following the discussion, a number of sites will be contacted by the Chairman and he will return with a recommendation to the Committee on the location.

ITEM 10         Chairman Majikes informed the Committee that the State Committee has been asked to consider a revision to the current football set up of a 16 week season and 4 classifications.  Chairman Majikes and Football Chairman, Tom Jenkins, discussed the ramifications to District II member schools regarding the possible plans under consideration.  Chairman Majikes explained that this will be a discussion item at the upcoming PIAA State Committee meeting to be held in State College during the State Basketball Championships.

ITEM 11         Chairman Majikes explained that he has received a number of favorable comments from the recently conducted PIAA District II Seminar on Sportsmanship.  The quality of the program and the individual speakers were outstanding.  He also reviewed a request by Dr. Jack O’Malley regarding the potential of adding a link to the District II website with the “Positive Coaching Alliance”.  There will be a cost associated with doing so and he asked Mike Ognosky, District II Secretary, to discuss this matter with Dr. O’Malley and report back to the Committee at the next meeting.

ITEM 12         Chairman Majikes established a meeting of the District II Basketball Committee on Monday, March 22nd at 4 p.m. at the Wilkes-Barre Area Career & Technology Center for the purpose of finalizing the structure of the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 District II Basketball Championships.

ITEM 13         A motion was made by Vito Quaglia, seconded by Don Kanavy, to adjourn the meeting.  All Ayes
