Meeting was convened at 4:05 p.m. by Chairman Majikes

ITEM 1 Chairman Majikes called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.

Absent but accounted for: Danielle DePietro, Fred Barletta, Eric Emmerich, Bill King, Vito Quaglia, and Chad Vinansky,

ITEM 2 A motion was made by Jay Starnes, seconded by Ron Collins, to approve the minutes of the October 19, 2016 meeting. All Ayes

ITEM 3 There was not a Treasurer’s Report at today’s meeting.

ITEM 4 Sports Reports – the following reports were presented at today’s meeting –

·         Basketball (Frank Majikes): Chairman Majikes reported that the District II Basketball Committee will be meeting following the Thanksgiving Break in order to finalize all of the details for the 2017 District II Basketball Championships to be held at the Mohegan Sun Arena. He also reported that he is waiting for only a few member schools to provide boys and girls basketball uniform shirts for the Arena as requested.

·         Football (Mike Ognosky): Thanks to all of those that helped with the management of the District II Football Championships. With the increase in classifications there were more games that needed to be covered and the response of the committee members in assisting was tremendous. In response to a committee member question, Frank Majikes reported that the issue of safety on the sidelines of football games is a school level issue. Personnel that is allowed on the sideline during a game is the responsibility of the host school.

·         Golf (Joe Farrell): Chairman Joe Farrell presented the Financial Report for the 2016 District II Golf Championships. The report included a summary of the Boys & Girls Individual Championships held at the Elmhurst Country Club; and the Team Golf Championships that were also held at Elmhurst. The report, which did not reflect the cost of plaques and medals, showed a total profit of $534.44. A motion was made by Maureen Williams, seconded by Ben Tolerico, to approve the report as submitted. All Ayes

·         Volleyball (Maureen Williams): Chairman Maureen Williams presented the 2016 Girls’ Volleyball Financial Report to the committee. Maureen also thanked the administrations at Wilkes University and North Pocono for their assistance in hosting the district championships. The report reflected a total deficit of $1,329.25. A motion was made by Pat Patte, seconded by Chris Gegaris, to accept the report as submitted. All Ayes

·         Competitive Spirit (Chris Gegaris): All is set for the 2016 Championships to be held at the University of Scranton on Sunday, November 20th.

·         Soccer (Mark Rinaldi): Chairman Mark Rinaldi thanked everyone for their assistance in the recently conducted Soccer Championships. The new format with the higher seed hosting throughout the tournament was well received.

ITEM 5 The District II Committee acted on the following eligibility motions:

·         A motion was made by Jay Starnes, seconded by Ben Tolerico, to approve the immediate eligibility of John Anzelmi, Lakeland to Scranton Prep, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Maureen Williams, seconded by John Coyle, to approve the immediate eligibility of Alquan Cade, Wilkes-Barre GAR to Wilkes-Barre Coughlin, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Pat Patte, seconded by Ben Tolerico, to approve the immediate eligibility of Ryan Hartigan, Holy Redeemer to Pittston Area, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Chris Gegaris, seconded by Mary Ruth Tanner, to approve the immediate eligibility of Sebastian Johnson, North Rowan HS (North Carolina) to Nanticoke, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Jay Starnes, seconded by Ron Collins, to approve the immediate eligibility of Aubrey McGovern, Holy Cross to Scranton Prep, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Mark Rinaldi, seconded by Jay Starnes, to approve the immediate eligibility of Jeff McHale, Lakeland to Scranton Prep, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Pat Patte, seconded by Maureen Williams, to approve the immediate eligibility of Marjorie Myers, Abington Heights to Scranton Prep, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

·         A motion was made by Mark Rinaldi, seconded by Bill Schoen, to approve the immediate eligibility of Jonathan Winter, Holy Redeemer to Pittston Area, in accordance with Article VI, Transfers, Principal to Principal Sign off. All Ayes

ITEM 6 At this point in the meeting, the District II Committee moved from their regular business in order to conduct an eligibility hearing regarding Maya Kornfeld, transferring from Wyoming Seminary to Holy Redeemer. The hearing began at 4:48 p.m. The hearing moved to private session at the request of both schools. Following the hearing and subsequent deliberation, the Committee returned to public session at 5:45 p.m.

A motion was made by Jay Starnes, seconded by Mary Ruth Tanner, to grant immediate eligibility to Maya Kornfeld. 7 Yes, 5 No

ITEM 7 At this point in the meeting, the District II Committee moved from their regular business in order to conduct a hearing regarding an incident that occurred following a District II Basketball Girls’ Playoff game between Holy Redeemer and Carbondale played at Wyoming Area High School on February 18, 2016. The hearing began at 6:30 p.m. Following the completion of the hearing at 9:30 p.m., the Committee moved a private session for deliberation. Following deliberation, the Committee returned to public session at 10:45 p.m.

A motion was made by Jay Starnes, seconded by Pat Patte, as follows:

·         The Carbondale Area and Holy Redeemer athletic programs will be placed on probation for the remainder of the 2016-2107 school year. This probation will be for all sports and any irregularities in regard to the following of the PIAA By-Laws are to be brought to the attention of the committee immediately.

·         Carbondale Area and Holy Redeemer will submit a corrective action plan to the District II Committee. The plan must include the following: sportsmanship training/coaching education for their girls’ basketball coaches; ensuring of supervision of all athletic teams participating in PIAA sanctioned events; and, orderly and timely reporting and submission of information to the District II Chairman and District II Committee as requested.

·         The complete Corrective Action Plan addressing all of the above is to submitted to the District II Chairman, Mr. Frank Majikes, by December 9, 2016.

·         The District II Committee accepts the submission and sanctions already imposed by Carbondale Area on its girls’ basketball coaches and the school must notify the District II Chairman regarding the date for the implementation of the suspension

·         The District II Committee thanked Carbondale Area and Holy Redeemer for their testimony in regard to this incident.

ITEM 8 A motion was made by Ben Tolerico, seconded by Jay Starnes, to approve the immediate eligibility of Ben Barnikel, Germany to Dallas, in accordance with Article VII, Foreign Exchange Students, of the PIAA By-Laws. All Ayes

ITEM 9 A motion was made by Ron Collins, seconded by Mary Ruth Tanner, to approve the immediate eligibility of Jesus Perez, Mexico to Tunkhannock, in accordance with Article VII, Foreign Exchange Students, of the PIAA By-Laws. All Ayes

ITEM 10 A motion was made by Maureen Williams, seconded by Chris Gegaris, to adjourn the meeting. All Ayes

Meeting was adjourned at 10:55 p.m.
